Comments: I'll never forget the Canteen back in 1944. I was stationed at Wendover, Utah and stopped there while on furlough. The people were so generous, it's something I mention whenever I'm asked about my days in the USAAF.

Comments: My mother, Lillie Belle Stokes, volunteered at the North Platte Canteen in 1943 and 1944. It's possible she met my father, a Marine, there. I am looking for information on my father. I have pictures of my mother and father if anyone recalls knowing Lillie, I can send them. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Robert Lewis Fortelny

Comments: This is pleasant to see. My wife, formerly Lori Huff, and I lived in North Platte for three (3) years, 1978-1981. She grew up there, graduating from High School in 1974, and our oldest son was born there in 1980. She still has two (2) brothers and their wives in NP, Bob & Sally Huff & Dick & Kathy Huff. It brings back good memories of our time in North Platte. Her dad & mom are buried in the military cemetary in Maxwell. He was a WWII vet and had been through NP during the war. He spoke fondly of the people he met, so when UPRR assigned him there he had little reservations about locating there. Thanks for letting me ramble & remember.

Thanks! Rick & Lori Mayo

Comments: I learned a lot from this page. I used it with a group of fourth graders who study Nebraska. They really liked the music. Many commented that randparents had these songs/records.

I think this is a terrific sight for Nebraskans to learn some history about their state.

Comments: I was born in North Platte in 1944. My mother was a volunteer at the canteen (Velma Spencer) and told us how rewarding her time spent there was to her. Now that she is gone I would like to hear more about it from others. It would be so nice if our country would have more of these kinds of things now - even though we're not at war.

Comments: Following is an e-mail I am sending out to veteran's organizations. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact me as soon as possible. We're really looking for WWII vets, in particular Battle of Midway vets. Thanks for your help!

Good afternoon!

NRD Omaha is in the process of setting up a large celebration at Rosenblatt Stadium (home of the Omaha Golden Spikes, Triple-A affiliate of the KC Royals) in conjunction with Battle of Midway Day. We are looking at getting a HUGE Navy contingent at this event, which stadium officials fully support.

Ideas so far include:

*Short ceremony with a color guard (Sea Cadets?).

*Attendence by Battle of Midway/WWII veterans, Navy League members, Big Red Sub Club members, active duty Sailors, Reservists, Delayed Entry Program enlistees, family members, and various civilians.

*Navy helicopter to fly over and land in the stadium parking lot to be on static display.

*Recruiting booth at the entrance to the stadium with various "freebies" and tickets for a chance to win Navy prizes. (USS NEBRASKA submarine float will be part of the booth/display).

*Navy T-shirts to launch into the crowd.

*Possibly the Leap Frogs (Navy parachute team).

*Etc. We're open to any ideas you may have.

We will have hundreds of significantly reduced-price tickets available for everyone who attends. We would like to have everyone in uniform or Navy-oriented clothing. Game time is 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 4.

At this point we're mainly looking for people/organizations that are interested in attending and/or participating in this event. Again, we're open to ideas since we're in the brainstorming mode right now. Please send ideas, comments, suggestions, etc., to me at pao_oma@cnrc.navy.mil or fax (402) 552-0677 or call me at (402) 558-6189 as soon as possible. Our first priority is getting confirmation on which groups and individuals will be attending/participating.

Thanks for your promptness! We look forward to hearing from you!

Comments: Great website. I visit the Lincoln County Historical Museum everytime I get 'home' to N.P. The Charles Kuralt film is excellent. Too bad the train station was torn down. The story of the North Platte Canteen is one of those great little known stories of WW II. Keep up the good work.

Comments: I was raised in North Platte as well as my mother Patricia Sorensen Lyne and she has told me many a story of the canteen and how it touched her life. She was a young teenager at the time and spent lots of hours there. I can tell by the stories she tells that they were good times for her.

I wish there were more pictures on your sight and the names of the people for the pictures you have.

I will be anxious to take a tour through your facilities with my mother beside me the next time I get back to North Platte. It is great to see a web sight detacated to this event that touched so many peoples lives. There are a lot of people of that era who have computers now and hopefully will be able to see "the good old days" even if they a bed ridden. I hope more people will be able to find your sight.

Thank You

Tamie Lyne Martin

Comments: Great Site. My father, mother, and all my aunts and grand parents all worked at the canteen. I was born in NP after the war, and grew up crossing over the viaduct and watched the trains stop at the depot. My father worked for UPRR and we used to have xmas parties in the old canteen area. Sorry UPRR tore it down. I have met people in Florida while traveling who had gone thru NP and stopped at the canteen during the war. They all had good things to say about it.

Keep up the good work on the web site. Great memories. thank you.

Benjie.

Comments: I went through on a troop train in 1944. I am sure none of us on that train will ever forget the experience. We all marvelled at the service and goodies provided by the folks from that area. As far as I know there was nothing else like it.
