Comments: I do not remember the first time I heard about the wonderful North Platte Canteen. I did see the TV show. My Neice was married in Tyron, Nebr. two years ago. I visited your canteen twice while I was there. I had a difficult time leaving that wonderful place. I flew combat in three wars. I did not have the good fortune of visiting your canteen during that time. Thank your people for the love and devotion they bestowed upon our servicemen during WWII. May they long be remembered for their kindness. Lyman M. DelameterLt/col USAF ret

Comments: A wonderful testimony to the great people of North Platte. As a WW II vet, I never passed through North Platte, but I did visit the "canteen" at Southgate, California which was a wonderful place where they made us feel at home for a short time.

God bless Rae Wilson and all of those fine people who made it possible!

I'm sure you know that words can never adequately express the gratitude of the men you made feel "at home" for a few minutes.

Comments: I stopped at the Canteen on app May 15 1944. We were going from Gowen field ID. to Lincoln Ne. to pick up our new B24H. I remember all the people giving us cofee and cake. It was great to get out of the train and get some food and drink. Thanks for all who made it possible.

Comments: Hi!

I'm a girl from Sweden and it's possible that I have some relatives in North Platte. (Sorry my English is not so good).

In 1906 Sivert Odin came to Hershey and I think that he changed the surname to Odean. I did find the name North Platte in some old letters so maybe someone moved there. Sivert had a granddaughter (or something like that) who's name was Kathy Odean, she was born in the 1950s I think. She got married and changed her surname to Hall. She moved somewhere maybe North Platte. If anyone knows something, please mail to me on: anettenordin@hotmail.com

THANKS

This site was a wonderful surprise and a delight. Think other communities in Nebr. should do likewise with their history. Thank you for this site, and I hope many who stopped at the N.P. Canteen find that this site rekindles fond memories.

I really enjoyed the site and it brought a tear to my eye, probably because we're away from the USA right now. There is not a greater nation in the world, and although I have always felt that way, it is brought even closer to home now that we are temporarily away! GOD BLESS THE USA!

Comments: I was very pleased to see that this fine establishment has been memorialized on the Web. If you have a few moments I'll explain my delight.

First, I am a "baby boomer," having been born in 1949, so I missed the actual operation of the Canteen. However, my Aunt and Uncle (Roland and Fern Schultz) were long-time residents of North Platte and during the fifties and sixties we would ride the UP from the East Los Angeles station to North Platte to visit them every other summer. These train trips were truly some of the highlights of my childhood and I remember much of them. Since North Platte was our regular destination I also remember the UP station quite well.

I was absoulutely infuriated when I learned that this historic station had been razed. Of course I didn't find this out until sometime in the 1980's so I just had to live with the frustration. But it certainly is nice to have a place to go to see some of the familiar images once again.

If memory serves, there were two UP trains which traveled the route from LA to North Platte. The first being the City of Los Angeles, which as I recall always ran slightly ahead of the second, which was the Challenger. We always rode the Challenger, which was the coach train and cheaper than the other. I always enjoyed sleeping in the reclining chairs. My parents of course didn't find them as comfortable, but we couldn't afford the expense of the Pullman compartments on the City of LA.

My earliest memories of the North Platte station are of us arriving in the wee hours of the morning. I don't have any of the old time tables anymore, but it seems like it was sometime after midnight. Uncle Rollie used to complain about having to get up in the middle of the night to come and meet us.

I won't bore you with anymore of this, but visiting your site has just opened the flood gates of childhood memories for me, and for that alone I have to say thanks.

Thank you for your patriotism, and for the trip down memory lane!

Sincerely,

Ron Fleischer
Windsor, Colorado

Comments: Excellent web site. It is nice to see the passion that is responsible for many of our fine museums carry over onto the Internet. The Canteen is an amazing feat and I am in awe of the sheer effort this must have taken. It restores faith to hear the story of the Canteen. You do an excellent job of preserving that story.

Comments: Doris Dotson (my sister) told me about this site. I have heard about the Canteen all my life, it must have been great for the troops moving out. I remember the UP depot and where the canteen was located. Now that is just a memory as the North Platte "leaders" decided to tear down one of the most historical sites they had, what a waste of history. Where I live, history is preserved.

GREAT WEB SITE! Nicely done!

Comments: January of 43 found me heading toward the Padific war. When it was announced 'all military
personel off train" we thought it was a military check point. Then the friendly North Platters descended on us with cakes and ham and birthday cakes and a welcome like I had never seen before. No soldier or sailor who received this town's loving welcome will ever forget it.

Thanks again, folks from Lt. Ralph Steetle, USNR

Comments: We have traveled through Nebraska many times. Each time we learn more and stop at more places. It's not just fly over land. It is rich in history from pioneer days to now. Our next trip through will most certainly include a stop in North Platte. We don't travel the interstate any longer, the country highways offer so much more.

Thanks for having this site. My Dad was in the Navy from 1944-1946. I don't know if he ever stopped there. I can't ask him.

It is good to see that there are interesting web pages being produced in the Heartland of America. The page is a good tribute to those who provided our servicemen and women a little "hometown" hospitality before having to face the uncertainty of war.
