I was very pleased to see that this fine establishment has been memorialized on the Web. If you have a few moments I'll explain my delight.
First, I am a "baby boomer," having been born
in 1949, so I missed the actual operation of the Canteen. However, my Aunt and Uncle (Roland and Fern Schultz) were long-time residents of North Platte and during the fifties and sixties we would ride the UP from the East Los Angeles station to North
Platte to visit them every other summer. These train trips were truly some of the highlights of my childhood and I remember much of them. Since North Platte was our regular destination I also remember the UP station quite well.
I was absoulutely
infuriated when I learned that this historic station had been razed. Of course I didn't find this out until sometime in the 1980's so I just had to live with the frustration. But it certainly is nice to have a place to go to see some of the familiar
images once again.
If memory serves, there were two UP trains which traveled the route from LA to North Platte. The first being the City of Los Angeles, which as I recall always ran slightly ahead of the second, which was the Challenger. We
always rode the Challenger, which was the coach train and cheaper than the other. I always enjoyed sleeping in the reclining chairs. My parents of course didn't find them as comfortable, but we couldn't afford the expense of the Pullman compartments on
the City of LA.
My earliest memories of the North Platte station are of us arriving in the wee hours of the morning. I don't have any of the old time tables anymore, but it seems like it was sometime after midnight. Uncle Rollie used to complain
about having to get up in the middle of the night to come and meet us.
I won't bore you with anymore of this, but visiting your site has just opened the flood gates of childhood memories for me, and for that alone I have to say
thanks.
Thank you for your patriotism, and for the trip down memory lane!
Sincerely,
Ron Fleischer Windsor, Colorado |
